City Paper - By Van Smith - Jun. 15 (News) - For a prisoner without a lawyer, Michael Smith has done pretty well as a civil plaintiff in federal court. His civil-rights claim is that numerous Maryland prison officials failed to protect him from a series of attacks by other inmates arising from a “hit” put on his life by a correctional officer he says is tied to the Bloods gang. Thanks to the thoroughness with which Smith has documented and argued his case in motions before U.S. District Judge Peter Messitte, it has survived two rounds of efforts by the Maryland Attorney General’s Office to have it thrown out.
NewsTrust Rating: Not rated yet - See Info » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

The book is testimony to a political history that has largely been erased, a prologue to a history of Baltimore that has yet to be written, and an extraordinary bearing of witness by a man denied due process who has spent more than 40 years in Maryland’s prisons.
NewsTrust Rating: 4.0 average (not enough reviews) - See Review » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer

Back then, Conway was a postal worker and U.S. Army veteran. He was also a civil rights activist who, as a member of the NAACP and the Congress of Racial Equality, had helped organize efforts to better working conditions for African-Americans at a number of major employers in the Baltimore area. His most renowned role, though, was as Minister of Defense in the Maryland chapter of the Black Panther Party—a position that put him on the front lines of a successful government effort to undermine the party.
NewsTrust Rating: 3.7 average (not enough reviews) - See Reviews » - Review It Visit NewsTrust | About | Sign Up | Disclaimer
