Community Manager at NewsTrust

I have been a media educator since 1995 - and deeply believe in the 1st Amendment and the role of the press as the great equalizer. I joined NewsTrust as a skeptic, disappointed in the merging of media, politics, and corporate interest. After reviewing hundreds of stories, I find myself hopeful again, both about the journalistic resources we have, and our ability to use them well. Prior to NewsTrust, I founded Wide Angle Youth Media, a Baltimore nonprofit that teaches young people how to tell their own stories and become engaged in their communities.

There are many gaps in the reporting of this issue: the rate of increase in accidents compared to the increase in solar and wind energy installations; the funding and origins of the "watchdog" groups; and a comparison of fatalities in the alternative energy field as compared to traditional energy companies, such as oil and gas. The end result is a somewhat biased and sensationalized article.

This is a well-written article, with many facts and arguments in favor of Nutella - almost an advertisement for the product. The writing style is as impassioned as if Arumugam was fighting for something far more serious than chocolate spread, however, adding melodrama to a fairly irrelevant story. A more nuanced piece would look more carefully at the issues surrounding palm oil, a ingredient in Nutella.

While light on quotes (and unfortunately no response from the subject), Biggers includes lots of research and documentation of Pearce's habit of using the words of others.

Great story giving the average reader a new perspective on the dirt bike riders, long maligned and criticized. Warren gets some great interviews with riders, and includes a lot of background to give the big picture and recent history.

They say the Sunday rides are times of peace and unity that bring together riders from every corner of town without guns or grudges. What if, each Sunday, the police ... More »

Rolley's plan is well-detailed in this article, though some more quotes from sources other than Rolley would add perspective.

Kurtz's "what-if" scenario is an interesting theory, but not well supported in his writing. The references to the "racial dynamic" are vague and raise more questions than they answer.

A brief, but informative report that gives some perspective on those who oppose the Dream Act. Quotes would have been helpful and would add more color and context.

There has to be a more interesting angle to cover heat waves than, "It's hot out." But it seems most news sources are sticking to tips to stay safe and talking to the same doctors.

Gin Ferrara Comment:

I agree completely! How can the story of the heat wave move beyond this to some deeper investigation or analysis?
