Sad but true, "the public has an acute ability to smell fakery or lack of authenticity.” Former Secretary of the Dept. of Labor, Robert Reich said that. I wish he were a presidential candidate!

Today, the middle class is distraught, apprehensive and shrinking. And poorer. In 1989, the median household income in America was $51,681 measured in today’s dollars. In ... More »

This is very important reporting coverage, as it clearly demonstrates the government of Liberia's superior grasp of the situation, in comparison to demagogues in the USA e.g. Jesse Jackson.

Panetta said that we’re looking at "kind of a 30-year war". What?! Why? I do NOT like The Intercept nor GG, but I trust his well-sourced quotes. I think there is mostly truth here. Even if it were sensationalized due to an underlying agenda, it needs to be taken seriously, regardless of one's personal biases e.g. my antipathy toward GG and his billionaire patron Omidyar.

Then we have Hillary Clinton (whom Panetta gushed would make a “great” president). At an event in Ottawa yesterday, she proclaimed that the fight against these ... More »

This is excellent reporting about a controversial and important subject: Vaccine refusal by wealthy, well-educated liberals in the most cosmopolitan urban enclaves in the country.

When immunization rates get too low, herd immunity is weakened. This isn't a myth propagated by Big Pharma or Monsanto for self-serving purposes. It is epidemiology, known for 100 years and found effective over and over, for every race, in every nation. This is a highly sensitive issue, which further compounds the danger. Private school administrators know the danger but are hesitant to speak out. Those that do express unease, as well as powerlessness to effect change.

A century ago, much of the resistance was coming from the working class, who were most targeted for compulsory vaccination: in steerage compartments on steamships rather ... More »

There is food insecurity in Philadelphia, even on the Main Line, yet the Jewish population themselves don't believe it exists at all. Divorce, medical bills and unemployment affect Jews just like so many others in post-recession America.

Often unseen and rarely discussed, Jewish poverty in the Philadelphia area hobbles lives in the same way it does among other ethnic and cultural groups. In fact, Jews may ... More »

This is a good report about an important topic with too little coverage. The $3.9 billion Tappan Zee bridge replacement is one of the largest public infrastructure projects in the USA.

Under the union's plan, costs would be $7.3 million higher, which is disputed by Tappan Zee Construction (TZC). The more significant concern (to me) is the contract. In 2012, the New York State Thruway Authority awarded a $3.1 billion contract to TZC to design and rebuild the bridge by 2018. If TZC finishes on time and under budget, they keep any remaining money as profit. If the project runs late or over budget, TZC pays the difference. This is what I think of as neoliberal ... More »

This op-ed by a credible source provides a logical and unbiased explanation for recent news reports about Ebola in Liberia.

I am suspicious of NGOs attributing catastrophic incidents and chronic dysfunction in central Africa to ignorance. Poverty and fear of exploitation are worse and more intractable problems.

I know how skeptical Liberians feel toward the government and international aid, given prior bad experiences. The majority of citizens do not trust the government, ... More »
